The UN considers the web so vital to communication, self-education and global participation that it’s called Internet access a human right.

Thanks to the good people at Online Schools, you can enjoy this Infographic that shows the current state of the Internet, and what it represents today in our society. Playing with some neat HTML5 technology and some real time data, this Infographic will surely shock you and give you a hint of how much the Web has grown in its few years of existence.

I’m amazed at how easy it is today to share your personal experiences with your circle of friends and family. Literally with the touch of a couple of buttons you can share your trips or any type of experience with anyone you want.

This past weekend I had the chance to run a triathlon in Mallorca, and on the same day I was able to share with my family not only a few photos from the experience, but also the course of the event on Google Maps, and how long it took for me to suffer and finish it!

I’d love to share with you my experience and invite you to do the same with your experiences…

The tracking of my activity in RunKeeper.com (I carried my iPhone in a waterproof case throughout the entire race)

Animoto Video I made from the photos of the event

Thanks to everyone who made this event, and the technology to share it possible.

One of the most fascinating things I find about Technology and our Internet age, is the ability to expand our experience and knowledge outside of our interests, by coming across (often by chance) other people’s worlds reflected on their blogs. It’s as easy as reading some of the most active and social blogs. You are always bound to find something interesting that you didn’t know even existed. And in the process, get to know the people behind it as well.

Today is BlogDay, a fun exercise where bloggers around the world post an entry recommending 5 blogs. A great way to share new experiences.

Here are 5 of my favorites:

I love Stop Motion (ilovestopmotion.org): Simple and clean way to watch some of the greatest Stop Motion videos created out there.

Robert Scoble’s Blog (scobleizer.com): One of the most informative sources of technology and entrepreneurship activity out there, especially in the Silicon Valley area.

Smashing Magazine (smashingmagazine.com): Are you a digital designer looking for inspiration? This one’s for you.

37Signals’ Blog (37signals.com/svn): 37Signals is a Web company from Chicago with a very focused point of view, always making the Web a better place by sharing ideas and experiences on their blog.

Toni Mascaró’s Blog (tonimascaro.com): Innovation, marketing, and so much more from this entrepreneur in Barcelona.

One more thing… if you are in Palma de Mallorca or plan to visit soon, check out Cafe y Más (cafeymas.net) to find out about some of the best hidden cafe spots in the city. You won’t regret it.

Happy Blog Day!

This June 30th marked the first official Social Media Day, an initiative put together by Mashable and there were over 600 Meetups organized worldwide to celebrate this day.

A day to celebrate the revolution of media becoming social.

Here in Palma de Mallorca, we had a great event right by the waterfront, and it was a blast to meet and connect with so many different people while enjoying the views from the terrace of the BLD Restaurant.

I wanted to mark the occasion with a video timelapse of the event and here’s the final result.

Filmed in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Music “Shout” by Lulu and the Luvvers.

Special thanks to BLD Restaurant, the organizers of Social Media Day Palma, Mashable and everyone who joined in the fun!

Today I had the privilege of standing in front of “La Seu”, the Cathedral of Palma de Mallorca, in Spain, and I wanted to talk to you about 3 points that can make you and your company truly remarkable.

1. Be helpful: We all have problems, and if you can stop for a moment and listen to your customers and approach them with solutions, they’ll be grateful and remember you for it.

2. Extraordinary Customer Service: I know it’s been said before, but this time, get everyone in your company involved. Make it a personal goal of every department. If you are remarkable in the quality of your customer service, you will earn the respect and appreciation of your customers, and next time they need anything, they’ll think of you first.

3. Forget about Marketing. I know it sounds crazy, but please just bear with me for a moment. There are too many companies out there wasting their money on ads, when they would be better off focusing that effort and money on developing relationships with their customers, in reaching out to them, and in being helpful. The fact is that if you do what I’ve listed here today, you won’t have to do any marketing. Your customers will do it for you. And in today’s world, that’s more powerful than any ad campaign.

Thank you for listening, and please get in touch with me and let me know what you think. Until next time,

-Franklin

#FollowFriday consists on recommending, through a message on Twitter, users that we find interesting and add value to the network. If you want to learn more, take a look at this article in Mashable. The concept has worked very well worldwide, and through this action, many have had the opportunity to be introduced to users who otherwise might have never found them.

Recently Scott Stratten from @unmarketing introduced a way to improve on the concept with #FollowFive. The idea is to go further and also add a short introduction with your recommendations. This way your followers have a better time deciding which profiles they are interested in following.

If I may, I want to share this video taken this morning in Cala Blava, on the Mediterranean coast of Mallorca, where I talk about #FollowFriday.
During my holidays in the Riviera Maya, I came across many people of all ages and nationalities, immersed in the world of the Web, and numerous examples of how people are taking advantage of it to find their vacation spots, plan their trips, or just share their unforgettable memories with theirs.

On my last day I had the opportunity to be in a special place called Chichen Itza, which is one of the 7 wonders of the world, in the state of Yucatan. Here I recorded this message of support and encouragement for those who still haven’t taken the step forward into this exciting and wonderful world of the Web. Note: video is in Spanish.

Far from wanting to enter any political debates on the challenges that our society is curently facing, for which there are much better sources than I, I would like to take a moment to point out some facts that can help us realize the power of social and community that we enjoy today.

Call it Social Media, Web 2.0, or anything you prefer, the Internet and its endless array of tools allow us to be connected to each other and form part of a Social Network called Humanity. And within this social network, we are beginning to discover that we can achieve things that we never imagined before.

The “tipping point” has undoubtedly been the impact and success that Barack Obama and his team reached with their social media campaigns. A positive example of the power of the online masses, where the American people felt heard and vinculated to his message of hope and change.

It was in this campaign that the world learned that we are not alone on the Internet. And that online also applies “in unity we find strength …”

A couple of weeks ago, and on a sadder note, it was the Iranian people who had to come together and try to face a harsh reality. And social media provoked a wave of support that has reached all continents.

This weekend we are getting a lot of news, tweets and videos from the events that have hit the people of Honduras. And this past week, thanks to social power, the Chinese people won a small battle against his government.

More than a decade ago we could not imagine this, much less that we could have a say and be taken into account by our governments. These developments, coupled with thousands of others that we are living every day, are opening our eyes to the social power that we can generate when we get together online for a common cause.

At the risk of being branded as a dreamer (I hope so!), I bet we are slowly building a better world. A world where Social Media is a tool that not only keeps us informed, but one that also helps us in the decision making process and when rapid action is most needed.

I hope that along this path we continue to realize that after all, our governments are also made out of people, just like their cities and countries.
